The main character, Guy Montag, is employed as a "fireman". He has the number 451 in his helmet and a hose of brass on his shoulders. His job is to burn books; in fact, where he lives reading is outlawed. Just because reading make people think, and thinking does not let people be happy. And happiness is obligatory. But everything will change when he knows Clarisse, a young girl who belongs to an antisocial family. Moved by their relationship, the fireman will hide a book that he rescues from a burning, and he will begin to read it, becoming therefore antisocial too. This novel was written at the time of the McCarthyism and it was serialized issues of the just created Playboy magazine; Fahrenheit 451 is one of the most famous dystopian novels of the 20th century, an enthusiastic outcry that tries to shake a society closed to the alienation.
