The dementias are a group of diseases characterized by loss of previously acquired intellectual abilities such as memory, language, sense or reasoning. These diseases are also associated with emotional and behavioural disorders, so important that may lead the people affected to lose their independence. This guide is an informative tool for the day by day of families and caregivers at different evolutionary stages of the disease. Authors: Andrea Slachevsky is neurologist at the University of Chile and PhD in Brain, Behaviour and Cognition at the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. She is specialised in dementia and cognitive neuroscience at the Federation of Neurology Hospital of Pitié-Salpêtrière in Paris, among many other charges. Patricio Fuentes is a neurologist at the University of Chile. Having a teaching postgraduate in Geriatrics, he is a member of the Advisory Commission of the Ministry of Health of Chile for the management of dementia and scientific advisor and director of the corporation Alzheimer-Chile. Lorena Javet is occupational therapist at the University of Chile, graduated in Geriatrics and Gerontology at the University of Concepción; she is now a teacher at the School of Occupational Therapy and occupational therapist in the Psychology and Medicine University. Patricia Joy is a psychologist at the University of Chile; she includes working teams on the Aged and she is part of the staff of the corporation Alzheimer-Chile.
