Salvador Allende (Valparaíso,1908). When he was 18 years old, he started to study medicine at university in Chile; where he graduated as a doctor, specialised in surgery. In 1933, after having already adopted the ideals of social justice and freedom which he had professed all his life, he took part in the foundation of the Socialist political party in Chile. He was nominated a general secretary in 1942. in 1966, he was elected president of the Senate and; in 1970, he obtained his first relative majority. Some months later, he was elected President of the Republic and the so called " Chilean way to socialism" started. On 11th September,1973 the Chilean reactionary sectors, helped by the foreign support gave a violent coup d´état which caused the end of the popular Government and provoked a wave of pursuit and death. The streets became full of blood in Chile. Allende, the president died in La Moneda Palace: leaving an immeasurable legacy for the future generations.
