Gaetan Bernoville was born in Donibane Lohizune in 1889, where he lived during his infancy. A profoundly catholic man, Carlism heavily influenced his first works. Already in 1913 he founded the magazine "Les Lettres" and years later wrote five books relating to the Basque Country: "La cruz sangrienta", "El Pais de los Vascos", "Al servicio de Don Carlos", Pierres el contrabandista" and "San Miguel Garicoits". Established in Paris, he directed one of the collections of the publisher Grasset and was elected as a member of the French Language Academy. He wrote, in 35 volumes, "A Spiritual Itinerary of France", a title that tells by itself the content of the work. He died in 1960. His pen has been on of the most agile and florid in the French language.
